Financial adviser research and methodology
This page explains how we build, check and update our UK financial adviser comparison guides. The guides are editorial lists based on public evidence. They carry no numbered ranking, paid placement or referral fee.

1. The comparison panel
The starting point is a frozen panel of 150 active, consumer-facing UK advice brands, assembled from the FTAdviser Top 100, replacement firms where needed, and additional national and regional brands. It is a constructed comparison panel. It is not exhaustive, statistically representative, or a list of the UK’s top or largest firms.
2. Eligibility and evidence
A firm must have a verifiable UK regulatory route, an active consumer advice service, evidence relevant to the guide’s use case, and enough current public information for the claims to be checked.
We review firm websites, the Financial Services Register, Companies House and relevant primary public sources. Each firm entry links to its supporting evidence and states when it was last checked.
3. Selection and presentation
Firms enter deep review when their public evidence matches the guide’s use case. Inclusion requires that evidence to survive a source-by-source check. We then describe the distinct situation each included firm appears best suited to. The order is editorial and does not express a numerical score or overall hierarchy.
4. Editorial independence
Firms cannot pay to appear. Calm Authority receives no referral or affiliate fee from the firms listed. Calm Authority sells software to professional firms, including financial advisers; any commercial relationship with a listed firm will be disclosed on the relevant guide and will not determine inclusion.
5. Corrections and updates
Each guide carries a dated changelog. We recheck the underlying evidence when a firm changes ownership, regulatory route, service, credentials, fee information or brand. Material changes to the firm list require a fresh evidence review. Corrections can be sent to info@calmauthority.ai.
Limitations
- Strong firms outside the constructed panel will exist.
- Public evidence cannot capture expertise a firm has chosen not to publish.
- Fees, ownership, personnel and regulatory details can change between checks.
- Inclusion is editorial evidence of fit for a stated use case; it is not a personal recommendation.
- The guides are research, not financial advice. Readers should verify current details and take advice on their own circumstances.
